January 13, 2012: Bad Luck, Sweet Beginnings, and Greasy Endings

Friday the 13th! Bad luck all around? I don't think so!

Breakfast:

  • 1 Umcka packet
  • 2 small pancakes
    • The pancakes were cooked perfectly. They were golden, extraordinary patterns that looked like the shape sunlight makes when hitting clear water. Faded from deep gold on the inside to light and fluffy on the outside. Thin, but not too thin. What a chef my friend/housemate Frankie Passalacqua is!
    • A sweet beginning to a filling day
      • The first of the pancakes was eaten with a grape-raspberry-strawberry-black cherry-blackberry jam called "Fruits of the Forest". Rolled like a crepe
      • The second was eaten with a drizzle of honey, a sprinkle of brown sugar, a large shake of cinnamon, and a small shake of nutmeg. Rolled like a crepe.
Snacks:
  • Sooooooooo maaaannnnnnnyyyy FRENCH FRIES!
    • I did the Fish & Chips experiment, which I will absolutely write about in a separate post, and I needed to test the french fries to taste the differences between the different potatoes and oils. Let's just say, the experiment was a success.
  • Organic blue corn chips and my favorite black bean and corn salsa
Dinner:
  • Fried fish, fried fish, and more fried fish
    • By the end of the fried fish experiment I was about to throw up. I learned that a person can only physically consume a certain amount oil per day before they begin to feel like they've fried their insides too. I ate fried shrimp, fried potatoes, fried cod, and fried tilapia cooked in all sorts of ways and dipped in homemade mayo. Not the healthiest day on my part, but hey! It's my homework. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have my friends to help me out on this one!
Dessert:
  • A cold Honeycrisp apple
    • I don't think I even have to say how refreshing this was. My insides were screaming for fruit after a full day of eating fried food. This was such a sweet and beautiful relief. I also drank like 5 cups of water.
