January 19, 2012: Pasta Galore

Lunch:
  • Organic split pea soup
    • HOT! I accidentally burnt my lip
    • 9 grain sourdough bread slice dipped in while cooling off
    • Thin, but not clear broth, tender pea halves mixed in
  • 1 slice 9 grain sourdough bread topped with an olive tapenade
    • Salty and memorable flavor
    • My mom used to buy this kalamata olive tapenade and when I found the same kind at the grocery store I was excited to try it again. It was as good as I remember it to be!
    • Very rich, a thin amount gives just enough flavor
Snack:
  • Small side of sushi rice cooked with a bit of olive oil and salt
    • Delicious, as always, but not as good as when my friend Frankie makes rice. He's practically a rice guru. I don't know how, but every time Frankie makes rice it's always so perfectly spiced and cooked just to the right consistency! I try to do it exactly as he does, but his always turns out better. Some people just have a gift I guess.
  • 1 Honeycrisp apple
    • I was up till 4:30am cooking merengue cookies (which I will post about separately) the night before and needed a little wake-me-up treat without caffeine. This did the trick!...for about an hour or so. What did I learn from this? Only stay up till 4:30 in the morning baking merengue cookies if you don't have anything to do the next day. Duh.
  • 1 mug of peach-ginger tea
    • The steam that rose from this tea and filled my nostrils was heaven. It smelled like sweet summer picnics. The warmth of the hot water warmed me up head to toe on this cold, snowy day.
  • Merengue cookies. I lost count. I kept munching on the baby-sized ones!
  • Hummus and whole wheat crackers
    • Great snack, just enough for a little boost of energy that curbed my hunger till dinner
Dinner:
  • Fresh, homemade egg pasta with pesto
    • Chewy, 3 feet long! Why? Because we could!

Frankie, aka master of all rice and pasta

Dessert:
  • Mango mochi
