January 18, 2012: My Very First Poached Egg and a Happy Salad Reunion!

Breakfast:

  • Eggs Benedict!!
    • Max and I made these the traditional way for a Hollandaise Sauce egg experiment, which I will talk about more in-depth in a following post. I also learned how to poach an egg for the very first time!! It's much easier (and healthier) than I expected! If anyone has ever seen the movie Julie and Julia (I watched it later in the day) there is a part in the movie where Julie has to poach an egg. The scene showed her failing like three times before she got it right, the egg whites floating around in the water and the yolk breaking everywhere into a total mess. I was cracking up because when Max and I tried it, we magically got it right on the very first try! I think it's because we used a Mason jar ring in the bottom of the pan to help the egg keep its shape (a trick that we got from this website--> http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/easy_poached_eggs/)
    • Poached eggs are tricky. The hardest part I found was fishing it out of the water without breaking the yolk or messing up the shape. They are healthier for you because you don't need any butter or oil to cook them. All you need is a little H2O. The egg is a very light consistency with a runny yolk. It tastes fresh, rich and simple, exactly how one would imagine an egg to taste.
    • Max and I ate 2 servings of eggs benedict, one with the first sauce recipe and one with the second.
Lunch:
  • 1 piece of 9 grain sourdough bread with leftover homemade lentil soup from the night before
    • This time I ate the soup a little differently. There wasn't as much broth left in the pot since we had reached to the bottom. I dove into the last bits by tearing off pieces of this bread and using it as a spoon, scooping up the lentils and carrots. The bread soaked up some of the remaining broth like a sponge and I carefully maneuvered the piece into my mouth without spilling.
  • 1 cup of rice
    • steamed and seasoned with a bit of olive oil and salt. Chewy in a lovely way, just sticky enough, flavorful. For some reason I always get so excited when I find rice that is cooked well and delicious.
Dinner:
  • SALAD!!!
    • This morning, while enjoying my eggs benedict, through the mask of buttery sauce I tasted the fresh basil that I had used as a garnish and my whole body started screaming "VEGETABLES! VEGETABLES!!". I think that's a sign I haven't been eating enough vegetables. So, I got a salad for dinner when I went shopping at Whole Foods! It was AMAZING. The assortment of treats all complemented each other and with every large crunch if felt like the juices washed my palette with every nutrient I was yearning for.
      • Fresh spinach
      • Mixed romaine
      • Sauteed brussel sprouts
      • Sauteed seitan
      • Chopped celery
      • Edamame
      • Butter beans
        • One of my favorite type of beans. They are a bit  bigger than quarters and they completely melt in your mouth with the slightest pressure.
      • Roasted garlic
      • Roasted corn
      • Marinated artichoke hearts
      • Cucumber slices
      • Bright purple cabbage
      • A sprinkling of sesame seeds
      • A drizzle of olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette
