January 23, 2012: Family Dinner...round 2!

Breakfast:

  • Wild berry organic cereal bar
  • Orange juice
    • I drank down a small cup of orange juice to wake me up and give me an energy boost as I grabbed this cereal bar and headed towards the bus stop. As Max and I waited for the bus I ate this cereal bar. It was crumbly and had a sticky, jam-like consistency in the center. It was sweet and held me over for a long time throughout the day.
Lunch:
  • Chicken Rice Soup
    • This soup was smooth and a bit lemony. The rice added a soft thickness to every spoonful. The vegetables were tender and flavorful.
  • Sourdough bread
    • I ripped up some pieces of sourdough to dip in the soup. They soaked up the broth nicely, but not as much as the 9 grain sourdough did. I think next time I'll buy the 9 grain again instead of regular.
  • 1 handful of goldfish
    • Goldfish are an ultimate snack food. For real. When people  think snack, they think gold fish. How did this happen? How did they become so well known? Well, for starters, it's because they're quick, fun, cheesy, delicious, portable, and they smile at you when you eat them. (Duh!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSy4TJN3DWY
  • 2 celery stalks
    • At this point in the meal I was:
      • #1 Craving a vegetable and
      • #2 Wanting to eat something crunchy
Snack:
  • Lentil chips and artichoke spinach hummus
    • Crispy and savory. This is good focusing-food, a great energy boost, and quite filling.
  • 1 teeny slice of chocolate cake
  • 1 mini triple chocolate espresso brownie
  • 1 more teeny tiny slice of chocolate cake
    • The problem with cooking cakes and brownies is that I like to put them out on the table in the open so that people will eat them walk by. This doesn't seem like a problem, right? Wrong. When I walk by the table I want to eat them too! My lack of willpower makes me wonder whether I could actually be a pastry chef one day without gaining a lot of weight. Or rather, whether I should!
Dinner:
  • Eggplant parmesan
  • 1 small glass of red wine
    • I believe in honesty.
  • Salad
    • mixed romaine
    • carrots
    • cucumbers
    • celery
    • raw tofu
  • Toasted french baguette
  • Pesto fusilli pasta
We had our second family dinner tonight! It was really nice. Alex and I cooked while singing along to the soundtrack of Rent. The smell of homemade red sauce, garlic, melting cheese and toasting breadcrumbs filled the kitchen. John threw together a nice, refreshing salad. We used the last of my homemade pesto to flavor a quick fusilli cooked al dante. I garnished each dish with a fresh basil leaf before we sat down to eat. We had such a great time! Lots of laughs, lots of tasty food, lots of pictures.
