January 9, 2012: Bi-Bim-Bop House Bonding!

Breakfast:
  • Honey & Almond Granola with 2% organic milk, 1 large handful of blueberries and 1/2 a banana
    • Crunchy and not too thick going down, the blueberries are sweet surprises in every bite, the bananas broke up the consistency of the granola. Yum! Energizing and refreshing way to start the day
Snack/Lunch:
  • 1 small bowl of white sushi rice flavored with chicken broth
    • I ate this with my friend Frankie. We were standing up over the stove, casually talking about life and munching on this flavorful sushi rice. I love sushi rice because it's a little stickier than most and the grains are smaller and a bit rounder. The chicken broth made the rice run together and added a salty and savory thirst-quenching flavor in every bite.
  • "Mighty Mango" Naked smoothie drink
    • This is really nice when you're starting to feel sick (which I was). It cools off a sore throat and it's nourishing
      • 1 1/4 Mangoes
      • 1/2 Orange
      • 1 3/4 Apples
      • 1/3 Banana
      • a hint of Lemon
  • 1 brown rice cake and a celery stick
    • I've noticed that I'm frequently attracted to crunchy foods (popcorn!, rice cakes, celery, apples, crackers, carrots, etc). They help me focus when I'm reading.
Dinner:
  • Bi-Bim-Bop!!!

    • A bed of white rice
    • Tofu with a soy-sauce/ginger dressing sauté
    • 1 fluff of alfalfa sprouts
    • 1 small bundle of thin carrot sticks
    • Several pieces of broccoli (Awesome recipe that I'll mention in the vegetable cooking experiment)
    • A spoonful of stir-fried baby portabella mushrooms
    • 1 small bundle of thin yellow and green zucchini sticks
    • 1 spoonful of beautiful, bright, purple cabbage
    • One over-medium egg (originally intended to be over-easy! Bummer.)
    • Decorative hot sauce, sweet and spicy dipping sauce, a drizzle of soy sauce
      • I got the idea to do bi-bim-bop for our "family dinner" while trying to think of vegetarian dishes that everyone in our house would enjoy eating. So I decided to take a little dip into the memory pool of my past pleasant vegetarian eating experiences. When I was growing up my dad would take my siblings and I out for dinner at this tiny diner in town that served half as an ice cream parlor and half as a fusion korean restaurant. The part of this restaurant that sticks out in my memory the most is the bi-bim-bop that they served there. It was served in a large bowl with the vegetables nested nicely on top of a bed of rice. The crowning jewel of the dish was the runny egg on top that you would pop and mix the yolk into the dish with a bit of hot sauce. This dish was perfectly filling, brimming with pleasantly satisfying flavors, and most of all...fun to eat! After remembering this experience, I did my best to replicate the recipe, and the result was a hit! Everyone cooked the food together, which made the experience of eating it so much more fun.
  • 1/4 roasted butternut squash
    • Nature's candy
    • No brown sugar or anything! It was so sweet, fresh, and tender. The squash came in our local communal farm share.
  • Small piece of french bread baguette
    • Toasted and warm. We ate this (even though we were eating rice too) because it was starting to go bad haha Oh, college students. Anyways, it was a smorgasbord of deliciousness.

I just have one thing left to say. Why the heck did it take us 4 months to finally get ourselves together and have a real sit down dinner?! It was so warm and there was so much laughter! We took plenty of pictures and had a plain ol' great time. We're going to try to do it weekly from now on. I think eating with the people your living with can form bonds like nothing else can. Meals bring people closer together in a way that only food is capable of! So much love.
